Combined with a new building automation system, this technology will help reduce electricity usage by approximately 21 percent for a very energy-intensive component of the Superdome. The new chiller plant optimization solution will also help reduce humidity and improve building and occupant comfort.

Another important takeaway is that while ESPCs are considered the primary means of accomplishing federal retrofits, blending ESPC funding with appropriated funding can both expand the scope and improve the value of federal deep energy retrofits. It’s an unusual sight—a semi truck raised on a ramp to a near-vertical orientation, its windshield pointing toward the clouds like a space ship ready to ascend into the heavens. In fact, there’s nothing unusual going on here at all, just the very terrestrial spectacle of trucks being emptied of their contents at the Savanna River Site Biomass Cogeneration Facility. Dozens of times a day, these trucks deliver wood chips to the steam and electricity generation facility to be burned as fuel in the plant’s biomass-fired boilers. It takes about six minutes to empty 40 tons of wood chips into the stockpile of biomass on the grounds. The fuel is mostly sourced as waste from the forestry industry, tree tops and other timber deemed unsaleable and otherwise left to rot on forest floors.

The administrators at Dunklin R-V School District located in eastern Missouri are expecting recently completed improvements to four of its facilities to save nearly $27,000 a year while enhancing the academic environment and avoiding future capital costs of up to nearly $300,000 annually. Completed in September 2013, the project was initially focused on the district’s Senn-Thomas Middle School, Pevely Elementary, and Taylor Early Childhood Center. Once the project was set in motion, a subsequent energy audit revealed that it would be beneficial to include the Butterfly Building, a facility also serving the early childhood and special needs programs.
